3 cocktails ranging from soft and fluffy to downright vicious

Cocktails can be anything from smooth & sublime on a tropical beach to wild and raucous at Ozzy Osbourne’s. These three give you the quick tour.

This week we bring you a true lady’s tipple, a middle-of-the-road yummy, and a chainsaw attack in a glass. The good news is that even something as violent as Stroh rum can still be yummy to the gums!

Gentle: The Upside-Down Greyhound

This one’s so mellow you could even sip it at work (not that we’d advise that kind of behavior, of course).

1 tbsp syrup

1 dash of Vodka

150ml fresh grapefruit juice

1 sprig rosemary garnish.

Mix all up by hand (except the rosemary), adjusting the amount of grapefruit juice to taste, pour over crushed ice in a vase-shaped glass and garnish with a fresh sprig of rosemary. Make dieting conversation or talk about the new blouse range at Woolies.

Fun lovin’: The Backyard Blueberry Cooler

Things are getting a bit more serious now. This colourful chameleon is liable to sneak up on you as the evening wears on.

1 tbsp syrup

1 “oops-I-slipped” slurp of Vodka

100ml blueberry or mixed berry juice

2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

A handful of blueberries

A few tarragon leaves

1 toothpick

Mix all of the liquid ingredients in a shaker and pour over ice blocks. Stick the blueberries on the toothpick and let them drown before garnishing with tarragon leaves. After a few of these you’ll be skinny-dipping the night away.

Vicious: Rudolph’s Nosebleed

This one’s for those who suffered military haircuts, cold showers and frequent beatings with a stout cane when growing up. A violent mother unlikely to ever feature at a bridal shower, this has the kick of a mule and the sting of a scorpion.

1 (really hot) chilli

1 ripe medium tomato

2 slices of a typical red pepper

1 dash of Stroh rum

1 dash of Jagermeister herbal liqueur

1/2 dash of Lapponia Lakka cloudberry liqueur

1 tbsp tomato sauce

1 tsp Tabasco® sauce

1 egg

1 tsp salt

2 dashes of apple juice

Chuck all the ingredients in your blender and let rip for around 30 seconds. Serve in a bold, square glass, with lots of ice. Lots. They’ll need it. Have a box of Kleenex on hand, and don’t be alarmed if several guests start bleeding from their eyes. Stand behind the braai if people start noticing you’re naked. Also, it’s a good idea to write your name down on a piece of paper before you start drinking. You’ll need it when the fire brigade arrives.
