Give brandy a larney makeover with these scrummy cocktails

We know brandy and coke are a match made in heaven, but some occasions call for a touch of class.

We can’t decide whether this is a cocktail with a B or a Bok with a tail, but we are convinced that it’s the kind of drink you can sip on all night long. And because it still contains Coke you may even be able to persuade your cuzzies from Brakpan to give it a try…

You’ll need:

25ml blended brandy

25ml triple sec

25ml lemon juice

25ml sugar syrup

75ml Coke

Pour the whole bang shoot into a shaker filled with ice and get your arms moving. Strain into a fancy looking glass and garnish with a green cherry and a pineapple leaf.

This iconic drink has been around longer than the motorcar, and although it’s often made with bourbon we think the sweet woodiness of brandy adds a special something something to the mix. A proper Old Fashioned is strong (but not too strong), sweet (but not too sweet), and always downright delicious.

You’ll need:

1 teaspoon superfine sugar (or 1 sugar cube)

2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters

60ml potstill brandy

Put the sugar in an Old Fashioned glass (or any fancy tumbler) and douse with bitters and a few drops of water. Add the brandy and stir well until all the sugar is dissolved. Add several large ice cubes and stir rapidly, before garnishing with a slice of orange and/or a cherry.

This creamy, indulgent delight is the perfect end to a cosy winter’s night spent around the fire with your nearest and dearest. John Lennon was famously fond of the drink that he affectionately called a ‘milkshake’, although it did once get him into quite a lot of trouble: he blamed a 1974 barfight entirely on his old pal Alexander…

You’ll need:

30ml fine aged brandy

30ml dark Crème de Cacao

30ml heavy cream

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice and shake vigorously to blend and chill. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with grated nutmeg.
